Carrie Mae Weems - The Heart of the Matter

The exhibition and the accompanying monograph offer a comprehensive new overview of the work of the internationally renowned artist Carrie Mae Weems (born 1953), who deals with questions of cultural identity, patriarchy and social belonging in her haunting photographs. The show spans Weems’ entire oeuvre and shows the depth and diversity of her artistic expression. On display are early, iconic series such as Family Pictures and Stories (1978-1984) as well as her recent work on Black faith communities. The exhibition highlights Weems’ unique ability to make visible the complexity and injustices of the world around us. At the center of her work are spaces that are often hidden in common narratives: Ateliers, plantations in the south of the US, domestic interiors and the ‘invisible institutions’ of black communities that emerged as places of faith in times of continued oppression. Weems contrasts these with pictures of monuments and museums. Those places of representation that were historically often marked by exclusion.
