Fujiko Nakaya's site-specific fog sculpture returns to the sculpture garden of the Neue Nationalgalerie because of the great public interest. The work transforms Mies van der Rohe's iconic architecture into a fleeting, atmospheric landscape and invites visitors to an intensive encounter with space, nature and perception. Nakaya's fog sculptures broaden the concept of sculpture by creating temporary, ever-changing forms of fog. In 2025, she developed a new installation for Berlin that includes the entire sculpture garden: Fog formations rise from different sides, mix with the trees and the solid sculptures and finally dissolve into the sky. Depending on the density, the nebula sometimes appears as an almost tangible volume, sometimes as a transparent veil. The clear architecture of the Neue Nationalgalerie with its visual axes and the long glass facade offers the ideal setting for this. Even from the interior, the changing fog images can be observed, while visitors in the garden can immerse themselves directly in the action.
