Stabi Kulturwerk, Unter den Linden 8, 10117, Berlin
June 12, 2026 – December 20, 2026
The exhibition ‘In the rhythm of the big city – 100 years of photography and press in Berlin’ sheds light on the interactions between journalism, photography and urban life in Berlin over a century. It shows how photographs have shaped the press landscape from the 1920s to the present and influence the rhythm of the news. In the heyday of the historic newspaper district, up to 147 daily newspapers appeared, while new technologies revolutionized press work and established press photography as a profession. The exhibition addresses the responsibility of photographers and the close link between image and report, including the challenges of censorship and propaganda. With historical photographs from the bpk photo archive, newspapers of the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin and contemporary works by photographers of the agency OSTKREUZ, the development of the visual language of press photography is illustrated. The photo exhibition at Stabi Kulturwerk offers a visual foray through the history of Berlin's press photography and reflects social values and conflicts.
