Izabella Gustowska: Home's Shadows

The Polish artist Izabella Gustowska (*1948) has been shaping the conceptually oriented Polish art scene since the 1970s. Her work moves at the intersection of body representation, subject construction and feminist image criticism and examines the conditions of visual perception as well as the cultural production of identity. As a professor at the Poznań University of Art and Design, she has influenced several generations of artists. She gained international recognition by participating in the São Paulo Biennale (1983, 1987) and the Venice Biennale (1988). For the exhibition at Kvost, Gustowska presents new works that deal with memory and temporality. The starting point is the family house in Poznań, where her family has lived since 1938 and which functions as a biographical and cultural memory space. The new works enter into dialogue with central works from the 1980s and allow a retrospective examination of recurring motifs and questions within her oeuvre.
