Jeewi Lee. Residual Memories

Jeewi Lee (*1987 in Seoul) receives the Gasag Art Prize 2026, which has been awarded since 2010 in cooperation with the Berlinische Galerie to outstanding artistic positions at the interface of art, science and technology. Lee works with site-specific installations, sculptures, pictorial series and interventions. In seemingly worthless materials and artifacts, she investigates the traces of time, memory and transience and combines scientific material analyses with Taoist philosophy and individual mythology. Her installation at the Berlinische Galerie is dedicated to Sand as a globally important and increasingly scarce resource. It continues the ‘Field of Fragments’ series, which began in 2024, and extends it into an immersive overall installation. Lee scans grains of sand from global coastal regions, processes them as computer models and models them up to a thousand times enlarged in different formats into sculptures and images.
