Robert Rauschenberg: Crosstown

Robert Rauschenberg was the first American artist to win the Venice Biennale Prize in 1964, making a decisive contribution to the international reception of new American art. Over half a century he broke up traditional ideas of the picture with great risk and inventiveness. His works combine autobiographical moments, the beach estate of the metropolises as well as news from fiction and reality in multi-layered, contextual compositions. For Rauschenberg, a broken road sign, a stuffed goat, a car tire, pictures of the moon landing, a piece of music or a tattered duvet cover could be just as worthy of images as canvas, oil paint, turpentine and screen printing. At the centre of the exhibition is the large-scale work ‘Crosstown’ from 1997, an urban panorama of shapes and colours without hierarchical order.
