Kunst im Westend e.V. is an initiative of the DRK Kliniken Berlin Westend and has been integrating top-class contemporary art into everyday hospital life since 2002. Curated exhibitions and site-specific commissioned works are presented on stations, in waiting areas, stairwells and the entire historic hospital grounds, accompanied by an interdisciplinary cultural program. The hospital is understood as an independent as well as extraordinary exhibition venue, in which works by internationally renowned artists as well as exciting young artists are shown: from Leiko Ikemura, Georg Baselitz, Heinz Mack, Otto Piene or Thomas Florschütz to Nadine Schemmann, Yang Shen, Ruohan Wang and Tobias Hoffknecht. Art is an integral part of healthcare: It creates spaces for encounters, supports recovery and resilience and promotes dialogue and the cultural participation of patients, visitors and employees. In doing so, the association Kunst im Westend is doing pioneering work in the field of ›Art and Health‹ long before concepts such as ›Museum on Recipe‹ were widely discussed.
